Rovio's Next Frontier

My grandpa loves the Angry Birds. He can play it for hours. And he is not alone. The popular game has been downloaded 700 million times by people young and old.

Now Rovio is releasing Angry Birds Space. The Finnish firm has pulled out the stops to promote its latest offering.

Rovio teamed up with NASA for what it calls the first-ever game announcement from space. (For those of you still unsure why these birds are so angry, take a moment to watch astronaut Don Pettit.)

Rovio had 51 flops before the huge success of Angry Birds. Critics say Rovio has put all of its eggs in one basket. Angry Birds Space joins three other games in the franchise... that kind of feel like the same thing with different backgrounds. But Rovio says this time it has something completely new.

It's also branching out the Birds. Rovio is working on an amusement park in Finland and hopes to open more around the world. That's in addition to the toys, cookbooks and clothes it already offers.

And with its latest launch, Rovio simultaneously released the Angry Birds Space game, animation, retail, and publishing. Seems like you won't be able to escape this potential new addiction.
