Confessions of a 'panda hater'

I used to hate pandas, but I'm okay now.
I used to hate pandas, but I'm okay now.

In China, one of the world's oldest pandas dies, while another shows signs of possible pregnancy.

And here in the Hong Kong newsroom, I inevitably get asked for my reaction.

You see, I'm known as the resident "panda hater." Go ahead, flog me with bamboo. I have long held the view that the giant panda is the Kim Kardashian of the animal world. It has big eyes, curves in the right places, and is ever-photogenic. It gets by on its good looks alone, while more deserving animals (the Yangtze River crocodile, hello??) are simply ignored by the world's animators and toy-makers.

Unfair, I say!

Not only that, the panda behaves in ways that are simply counter-intuitive to staying alive. It eats bamboo when its body is not adapted to digest it. It rarely mates and requires human intervention to prolong the species - so much so that zookeepers have resorted to screening "panda porn" to encourage coupling.

Many others have refused to pander to the panda, including wildlife expert Chris Packham who said they "should be able to die out" and the Animal Review which gives the giant panda an "F" for "occupying valuable zoo space while bringing little to the table."

I have shared their disaste, and paid the price for it. Over the years, I've received gifts of panda candy, panda toys and "I heart panda" buttons from friends and colleagues all with the intent to wind up the hater in me. My Operations Supervisor made sure to give me a stuffed Jing Jing, the panda mascot from the 2008 Beijing Games described as "charmingly naive and optimistic."

I strung the plush diva up in my kitchen as an ironic tchotcke.

And then, I became a mother.

When my daughter was 6-months-old, I caught her searching for the swinging panda in the kitchen. Twelve months later, she would point at the stuffed doll say "panda" in both English and Chinese. I eventually took Jing Jing down and handed it over to my little one. The tchotcke became her chum.

I decided to take her to Hong Kong's Ocean Park to visit its panda habitats. Sure enough, the pandas were a no-show. They were simply too occupied sleeping in the backroom to stroll out and let a 2-year-old take in all their fuzzy fabulousness. My toddler, along with another young visitor, were in tears. And I sensed the panda hate starting to rise again.

But then, it appeared. A giant panda wandered straight toward us and sat down, just two meters away, to eat its bamboo breakfast. My daughter started to describe its eyes, ears and actions. She was mesmerized. I was mesmerized. That damn panda made my heart melt.

I am no longer a "panda hater." But I should admit, I do feel a tinge of pride when my daughter asks to see the Asian alligator instead. I want her to be a daring girl who is willing to venture beyond the cuddly... and yet willing to admit, yep, that was cute.

Just don't get me started on Kim Kardashian.

    Vinny, it's a well-known fact.

Pandas are, indeed, the spoiled divas of the animal kingdom. I've seen them up close and, unlike Kristie, still hate them. They are useless as far as animals and living things are concerned.

I m from HK and I got to see a Panda in Macau because I went to their quaters with my relatives. They look alrite but not something that match up to the hype they create. The polar bear looks much better and they are stronger animals. Other "common" animal like african elephant, lion, leopard, even a pack of wolf looks more interesting than Panda... and I really miss our Mrs. Ocar of the Ocean Park...

To be honest I do not want the Ocean to have another ocar... I saw her just once almost 20 years ago but she has that charm especially when you compare her with those Pandas.

God dam that panda... it should be rolling around on a ball for everyone to gawk at and performing on command. Life at zoo is no free meal ticket, it's a life of enslavement and amusement...
if it doesn't do what is required we should kick it out & put it back into the natural dwindling ecosystem that we are destroying because of our self absorbed gluttony of perpetual disrespect for earth.

NW- I saw two polar bears squaring off at the San Diego zoo once- they were standing on their hind legs and roaring to make your ears hurt as they swung their paws at each other. I can truthfully say that the entire crowd of about 30 of us humans were terrified of the 8 ft tall monsters. It was amazing!

But who in their right mind "hates" pandas?

Hate is a strong word. That's why it's associated with such things as hate speech, hate crime, etc.

My guess is that this author doesn't really know the meaning of hate. That she, like many other iPhone-toting, rap-listening youth these days, thinks that hate is the root word of the colloquialism "hater."

It's not and "hater" is a stupid phrase. Why don't you young idiots learn how to properly use the English language?

I think Panda should be raised for human consumption in a sustainable fashion, similar to Bison in the U.S.

They must be delicious or they wouldn't be endangered.

Also, someone MUST stop Panda Express and their false advertising. NONE of their menu items actually include Panda.

Pandas are the "loss leaders" of the conservation movement. Sure, it is debatable as to whether the efforts to save them are truly worth the investment but they are the ones that get the money coming through the door in the first place.

In some sense, their delicate nature is what makes them so special for if we can save them then there is certainly hope for more durable species.

Pandas are nothing to make a big deal over, and I think the issue here is simple...PEOPLE. People are the reason this comes up. People are so drawn to things they see as "cute" or "cuddly".

I look at these bears like the rest of them. A dangerous animal that unless I have to face off with...I couldn't care less about. Infact we should let nature weed them out because eating only one plant is about as "adaptable" as a square waterhole to a round faucet.

Allowed to die out? The Giant Panda was once common across most of Southern China. They survived for millions of years before 1.4 BILLION Chinese showed up and nearly wiped them all out down to just a few tiny dots of the land they once roamed. So after massive persecution and human pressure people actually feel we should just let them "die out" as if it were a natural thing? Left alone, they were doing just fine.

Sounds like you were expecting way too much out of a captive animal. There is no reason to hate any animal. As far as letting them die out, I see your point. If a species requires human intervention to keep it from extinction (assuming humans did not put it into that situation in the first place), then it does seem like a waste of resources to try to preserve the species.

Anyone advocating the death of any living organism, is living in hatred, and are immoral human beings. Those saying that any animal takes up valuable space should be ashamed of themselves.. We need to embrace our living conditions, and those living with us. We would not be here today if it werent for the animals that we co-existed with all of these years... come on people, get off of your selfish rocker, and stop hating... Sometimes i wish we lived in the ages where people actually had to hunt and gather.. then others would learn to value life and everything that comes along with being alive.. (enjoy your world, you wont be here for long)

What I hate is ignorant people who pass judgment on other animals from the point of view of self-important humans who think they are "lords of the earth". I'm sorry, but nature didn't ask you if she should create pandas, or manatees, or anything else. Nature doesn't care if you think they have a "use" or not. They evolved because they have a place in the ecosystem, a role to play in the web of life. They are living beings who unfortunately can't speak for themselves, and they don't have hands, tools or weapons, so they are at the mercy of human prigs who think they can mess up the natural world at will. Pandas have trouble surviving because WE HAVE DESTROYED THEIR HABITAT. Mr. BRod thinks that therefore it is a waste of resources to save them. On the contrary, we have a moral obligation to save them since it is we who have endangered them. Anyone who doesn't see that doesn't have a moral center, nor any understanding of ecology.

"Let them die out." "Let them fade away." "They are useless."

Do the people who are making these comments realize that Pandas aren't dying because they are stupid or useless; but because their habitat has been destroyed by human expansion. They were doing just fine with their diet of bamboo for many years before humans were even on the planet. The only reason they need our help now is because we are the ones who hurt them.
The most obnoxious comment I'm seeing is the kind that says that they are "useless", and should therefore be allowed to die. I'm so sorry that they don't entertain you, or provide you with meat, or guard your house. But neither do most wild animals. Are these people so conceited that they are determining who deserves to live or die? What use do you bring to the planet, other than consuming it?

Crocodiles: Eat dumb animals that get to close to the water when alone. Coyote's scavengers clean up road kill.
Truckasaurus rex: gets rid of old cars that no one wants to buy. every animal has a job for its eco system right, what does a panda do it just sits and eats one stick of bamboo and sleeps all its like the guy on welfare who cant work cuz he's fat. and you know i hate pandas they are the wuss of the animal kingdom. grizzly bears and polar bears are beutiful strong and fiersom, who will fight when threatend. pandas would just be the fat kid who sits there and takes the beating, and not be the fat kid who slammes the little bastrd kids to the groundd pretty much giving the kid a cuncussion. lol but pandas are fat

I kinda get where the author is coming from. I feel the same way about orchids (you need a metal rod to grow?? just be extinct already!!!). But pandas were doing just fine until humans started mowing down their one food source and encroaching on their forests. They may be picky maters, but once upon a time they had the luxury to be so. Now they are paying because WE are effing up the planet. So are koalas, dolphins, polar bears, and a grillion other animals even far less picky.

Please read Panda Process's post. Panda populations have not died out because they're bad at mating (which they are) and exist on a diet almost devoid of nutrition (which they do), but because people have killed them off. How frustrating to know that so many people think we should finish the job. And how arrogant of people to think that they have a right to declare that an entire species of animal does or does not deserve to live.

While I think that the HSUS has a place in the fight for animal arwflee rights, I don't believe that they qualify for charitable status. It is important to make sure that food animals like cows, pigs and chickens are treated fairly and humanely, but everyone has their own version of fair .A while back, Mary from Dancing Dog Blog schooled me in the ways of websites like Humane Watch, The Center For Consumer Freedom and Activist Cash. Just like the HSUS, they are lobbying interests with their own agendas, so I tend to take them with a grain of salt. The HSUS tends to target industries like hunting and slaughter because most people are so far removed from dispatching their own food and tend to be esaily upset about killing an animal. I hunt and I fish. I dress and eat everything that I kill, how many people can say that? I suppose that I have a different view of hunting and fishing since it has been a part of my life since I have been a baby.I'll bet what you didn't know is that hunting conservation groups like Ducks Unlimited do far more for habitat and wildlife conservation that the HSUS AND Sierra Club combined. I'm doing a bit of research right now to write a blog post. I'm sure that the results will surprise a lot of readers. The HSUS is targeting dove and pidgeon hunts and labelling them as inhumane. What they fail to mention is that the majority of the hunters actually eat what they kill. Most of the dove and pidgeon hunts are done over farmers fields to cut down on the destruction that these birds can do to crops.

Humans should not bad mouth other animals for trying to digest foods we should not be able to eat (like vast quantities of meat or cheetos). Thanks!

The great panda - with its very limited diet and infrequent mating habits - is a pretty poor candidate for long-term survival. It's become (literally) the poster-child for endangered species simply because it's so distinctive-looking. There are "nobler" species who's extinction is almost guaranteed (the Bengal Tiger leaps to mind ) that I will mourn much more than the panda.

Still, the panda's rapid disappearance is largely the result of policies initiated by Mao Zedong, one of history's most ruthless (and successful) dictators - so saving the panda may have some deeper symbolism.

Presumably everyone's tongues are in cheek, but this idea that some manifestations of natural selection are more worthy of esteem than others is, all joking aside, ridiculous of course.

Each creature that exists has taken, and is gradually changing–or not, as the cheetah for example–its place in its ecosystem with its particular solution to the problems of finding and utilizing food, water, space, etc. Lions are not hunters in order to be elegant and majestic, and manatees are not inactive in order to be deemed 'turds' by some idiot...survive and advance is the game, it's not a popularity contest. Each creature that exists is a suitable solution, at least for a particular time, in that particular place, to the problem of staying alive.

As commenter PandaProcess pointed out in a good comment at 5:24 ET, the panda was getting along just fine until its ecosystem was taken out from under it.

Then it does become a popularity contest–which animals do we keep alive in zoos? But if their ecosystem is disappearing more rapidly than is 'natural', and if they can't adapt, being long-lived and slowly evolving animals, it's not because they're stupid or unworthy.

Because... some of you? It almost sounds like you're not joking.

Now me? I hate grackels, myself. I'd like to see the grackels killed.

I don't know if this article was supposed to be funny or serious. Perhaps the problem was that it isn't enough of either. It says, well, NOTHING. It's not particularly amusing that the parasitical human race is close to destroying pretty much ALL the large mammals on the planet, not just pandas – but we'll soon say goodbye to elephants, tigers, rhinos, leopards, grizzlies, and gee, like, every single primate on earth but humans (unfortunately). It's too bad for the panda that it doesn't understand that it is going to have to get on a human mating schedule if it wants to survive – or that it exists to entertain the stupid 2 year old human morons who are rapidly destroying its species.

You hate pandas? Whatever. Humans are the one species on earth that has EARNED my hatred.

I can see why she hated them, anything that is over-hyped by the media has a tendency to do that, and pandas are over-hyped times ten!
I feel that way myself sometimes from having it pushed at me by the media too much every time a panda burps or blinks.

I think her daughter was actually attracted to the black and whiteness at 6 months old. A baby's eyesight is not fully developed at that age and there have been studies done that shows they tend to respond more to the very high contrast black and white mobile toys over the colored ones.

Of course once she took it down and gave it to her baby the soft fuzziness of the toy was also very attractive for cuddling.

If you dropped a panda off in any other place on earth without bamboo the pandas going to die but if you drop off a hman anywhere on earth with food and a normal temperature(50-80) we would survive but pandas have evolved backwards. Instead of getting better, pandas have lost the ability to eat a variety of things but now they just EAT BAMBOO. WE COULD HAVE USED THE BAMBOO TO BUILD BAMBOOEY STUFF BUT INSTEAD PANDAS ARE EATING IT AND DOING NOTHING!!! I rest my case

Just a decade or two ago, meerkats were relegated to an unimpressive enclosure at the back of the zoo, about as glamorous an attraction as prairie dogs (and zoos were probably more likely to have prairie dogs!). Then, the Lion King happened, and after that Meerkat Manor. Now the meerkat is the sweetheart of the plains-dwelling mammal world, and meerkats everywhere are enjoying new, spacious enclosures with the kind of elaborate interactive exhibits once reserved to Big Cats and the occasional seal or polar bear.

Maybe the Yangtze River crocodile will have its own Renaissance someday. If it can happen to the meerkat and warthog, why not the crocs?

It's absurd that you call certain species of animals more deserving of protection than others. It's one thing to not like them for whatever flawed reason you give, but another thing for you and other people to act as though they have 'value', based on what they can offer the human species, that decides their worth of existence. I have read a lot of articles that have been disturbing to me, but this is the first that has made me post a comment. By the way, the pandas never asked for the attention, thought you might want to be told since it seems to have skipped your mind.

It won't work and should NOT work. It is just a waste of time and money. If Darwin is right, these things should have dies out ages ago. They are too stupid to survive. Goodbye lazy, fatass pandas. I love the people here trying to turn the discussion into to some problem with human morality and making sweeping judgments about other people's judgements.

I don't like pandas. Yup, they're cute. And yep humans stole their habitat. But, that's part of evolution. I'm not advocating it's right and by no means am I suggesting human kind is evolutionarily superior (there's a lot of people on life support (metaphorically) and wouldn't have made it with out some sort of un-natural assistance). But, pandas were pretty much on their last evolutionary leg.

If if human kind didn't destroy its habitat – they don't reproduce at a rate that is sustainable to persevere. Who is to say syphilis wouldn't kill them off or tigers or some sort insect infestation? They are mammals. There's not a whole lot of long living mammal species over the earth's history. Nature will eventually win... and that includes us.

So if you self-righteous folks out there want to scream about how cruel we anti-pandites are; keep locking the pandas up in cages, playing your panda porn and parading thousands of people to silently stare (god forbid someone makes eye contact) at them – there's nothing inhumane about that.

Bottom line is, pandas can either evolve or continue to depend on the human species to survive. Either way... they're probably screwed as inevitably we will be someday too.

Kristy has a great take on this issue. I think you people are just too dumb to understand and comprehend anything. If you listen to her words, they are not too different from others who have opinions about a variety of subjects. And to be able to relate them in a way that shows her objective side means she is more observant than you think. This is great work by Kristie. It brings me to an understanding about the panda at its truthful, beautiful nature of the beast.

I went to Panda Express thinking they served Panda Burgers and I could help eat them to extinction. Unfortunately they gave me orange chicken instead.

If we're gonna start letting useless beings die, let's just start with: drug adicts, alcoholics, inmates, pedophiles, disabled, challenged, ugly, democrats, republicans, rappers, machos, gays, sick, stupid, ignorants, and so on until humanity is all gone!!!! Animals rule!!!

It's not just that they're cute, it's that their dwindling numbers - by one account as few as 1600 - represent their vanishing habitat at the hands of humans. There are, in fact, other animals that live in the giant panda's habitat. Amongst them are the red panda, which is actually not a bear at all, but have its own family called Ailuridae, and number fewer than 10,000. So, let's not hate the panda for being 'useless.' We humans are far worse than useless - we're dangerous.

All animals are actually important just in a way we don't know. Panda Genetics are actually different from all types of bear, the only reason they are being wiped out is because of human fucking interaction. (Oh humans? They don't do anything bad. Some people need to know George Carlin.) I just don't see why we try to breed a Panda with another type of bear, see if the results make the pandas able to mate in a longer mating season. (The mating season is short, the fuck can you do about it.) Then again, we shouldn't have to worry about this if the animal were not on the extinction list because of us. (They wouldn't be important IF THEY WEREN'T ON THE EXTINCTION LIST.) And hell man, why go to a zoo when you can go on a poaching safari and shoot some animals yourself. More realistic, and you can get the chance of some human hatred from the animal if the tranquilizer doesn't work fast. :))))
