Top Gun Day

I'm not sure what's harder to believe: That "Top Gun" is 25 years old, or that there's a whole day dedicated to the movie.

Either way, being the 80s movie buffs that we are, News Stream just had to join in the fun and celebrate Top Gun Day... which we did with a little help from our good friends at iReport. And aviator sunglasses.

Why "Top Gun"?

There's something about that movie that's struck a chord with people that makes it memorable 25 years on. It's hard to say it's a great film - but it's inspired so many to send us a ton of great iReports.

It is intensely cheesy. And yet it is incredibly enjoyable. It's extremely clichéd, but also eminently quotable.

It simultaneously panders to both sexes: Men get gratuitous shots of fighter jets set to rock music; women get that volleyball scene.

And while most movies have one iconic song associated with them, Top Gun has four: Danger Zone, Take My Breath Away, You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin', and Great Balls of Fire. (And I'm not including the theme!)

There is something strangely compelling about Top Gun that endures to this day, proving that it's always a good time to buzz the tower.

Chris Posted on Why, in this long and vibrant doisucsisn, has nobody mentioned Alias? It is THE perfect shot at creating a female superhero movie that has ZERO baggage attached to it.Wonder Woman will always have to contend with too-many-cook syndrome, as it's one of the big three DC properties. The Marvel characters, as was pointed out, have to contend with their male name-sakes.But Alias has everything you could ask to take a no-risk shot at making an amazing movie. The character is new enough that everyone has to be introduced to her to some degree, mainstream and in-the-know-nerds, yet she's squarely built into the Marvel universe now.She has the best of all hero journey stories she doesn't want to be a hero, tries her best to do right without her powers, and then in the thick of things steps up to the plate. And to a certain degree, you're not selling people on the idea of a superhero movie, but a thriller where the hero just happens to be able to, later in the movie, fly and toss cars around. And, cameo, Power Man.Also, Thor = awesome. It has to be remembered Thor was the great equalizer. For some (women readers apparently) the realistic human storylines were enough, but for some (male readers apparently) there was always one small problem with the Marvel Universe it didn't have Superman. But damn if it didn't have Thor (first person to say Sentry gets disowned.)

I think my dream job would be the person responsible for oiling-up and cleaning sand off "Slider" in that volleyball scene. Time-travel bucket list!

We really get into and love to quote our Bibles. We really get into and love to quote William Shakespeare. We really get into and love to quote _Star_Trek_, _Star_Wars_, _Top_Gun_, _Jerry_Maguire_, _A_Few_Good_Men_, and _Mission_Impossible_Whatever_the_number_, _Gone_With_The_Wind_, _Harry_Potter_, and more! We really do get into our movies and our T.V shows and our books and our plays. We get into our poems that we love to read and quote. As Robert Frost says ... I stopped in the woods one night ... that'll make a good movie, wouldn't it? An adaptation of this poem by Robert Frost? You never know what one can adapt into a movie for your viewing pleasure, only thing is, there are comet(s) headed this way. Comet Elenin on You Tube. I';ve seen the videos on You Tube last night and they're a must see!
